Are inflamed red bumps normal after laser hair removal?

In order to understand why reactions occur, it's important to have an understanding of what's happening during your treatment.

Perifollicular Edema (PFE) occurs when there is an interaction between laser heat and hair follicles. The goal with laser hair removal is to damage unwanted follicles by transferring enough heat so they no longer continue to grow hair. Laser concentrates large amounts of energy and depending on skin type, thickness of hairs, and lifestyle, this kind of energy may cause changes to the follicle causing PFE.

vs. the untreated right side.)

Each indivdual is person dependent and not everyone will experience PFE, as it's a reaction of the skin not a side effect from the laser treatment. When the root of the follicle gets swollen it shows in the form of small, inflammed, red bumps and may sometimes feel itchy and irritated. Consider this a sign that the laser is being absorbed successfully!

This temporary reaction is natural and typically subsides within 30 minutes. In rare cases, people with coarser hair react differently and may have a reaction for at least a few days but should not last longer than 2 weeks. Applying aloe vera or 1% hydrocortisone lotion 2 times a day will help with any itchy, blemished or swollen skin. A cold compress also helps alleviate any uncomfort.
